Maintenance costs on electric cars are 33 to 55% less than gas cars

Electric vs. Hybrid vs. Gas car maintenance

Electric cars are much easier and therefore less costly to maintain compared to the internal combustion engine (ICE) cars.

According to this article on Green Car Reports, it is 33% cheaper to maintain electric cars than gas cars.

Oil ChangeHere’s a comparison of the maintenance costs between my 2009 Toyota Corolla (gas car) and the 1986 Toyota MR2 (electrc car).  Assuming a 10 year life span and 15,000 miles per year for a total of 150,000 miles (that is probably the time that the LiFePO4 battery pack will last).  The electric car costs 55% less to maintain in my case, mostly due to the lack of oil changes every 5,000 miles.  By the way, here is an article on Edmunds suggesting that more frequent oil changes than every 5000 miles are unnecessary.

Table of costs used in the above table

maintenance item* materials labor** total
oil and filter change 30 20 50
check connections/tighten bolts 0 20 20
change spark plugs 40 20 60
change cabin air filter 30 20 50
change engine air filter 30 20 50

* note: I am omitting maintenance items that must be done on both cars like rotating and changing tires, and inspection and tightening of the elusive drive shaft bolt.

** note: labor is assumed to be $40/hour.

The electric MR2 just passed 20k miles and I’ve saved over $2500 in gas money so far!  I keep a list of maintenance items and log for the electric MR2 here.
