I recently moved my family to beautiful San Francisco to cut down on my lady’s 3 hour rush hour commute to the city every day. My commute got longer but is still more bearable than hers.  We took the plunge and moved to the city.         Unfortunately, my round trip distance [...]

You can easily save 30% off your commute cost simply by driving slower. What does 30% mean to you?  If it means $30/month, that’s $360/year, or $3600 over the life of the car (assuming a 10 year life) I collected some driving and energy usage data in my electric MR2 and confirmed that by simply [...]

Coda Automotive has just filed for bankruptcy last week. [...]

With the knowledge of my new limited range, I need to find charging stations around the bay area to extend my range. The good news is that there is plenty of free charging around the bay area. San Francisco has announced that it will charge EVs for free in public garages until 2013, READ HERE [...]

Now that it’s getting dark early, my ammeter display has not been visible on the drive home from work. Also the original dash lights were also not working, so reading the dashboard was difficult. I purchased some LED bulbs from autolumination.com and now I have a lighted dash and light ammeter. I also replaced the [...]

I applied and received a parking decal from DMV.   The decal allows me to park in special parking public parking spots that are equipped with charging stations.  The cost of the decal was $17.   This decal doesn’t mean that you get to park for free, it just allows you to park in a [...]

So I charged the LiFePO4 cells to 3.4 volts each for a full charge and tested range this weekend. After 82 miles (freeway/local roads – top speed 80 mph on flat), the cells were averaging 3.14 volts each at rest. The battery manual from the manufacturer suggested that at 3.1V the batteries would have been [...]

So I’ve been rethinking the whole AC vs. DC system question and I am moving towards a DC conversion now. Here’s my reasoning: though AC is more efficient and has regenerative braking, it costs about 3-5k more. The extra efficiency comes out to about 5-10%, which, assuming an average DC conversion with a range of [...]

My fellow EV friend Steve and I did a trial run with his Honda Civic EV from my house to my work to see if his DC design would work for my commute. My commute is 22miles one way, mostly freeway at 65mph, and has a monster 9% grade hill for 1/2 mile at the [...]
